Resumo

Neste artigo apresenta-se a análise de falha de uma engrenagem helicoidal pertencente a um reversor de um motor de combustão interna do tipo marítimo. Após analisar o princípio de funcionamento, as causas potenciais de falhas e dimensionamento deste componente, amostras foram retiradas do material da engrenagem para realização de análise visual e microestrutural, bem como ensaios mecânicos de dureza e microdureza. Em seguida, foram calculadas as tensões de flexão e de contato para verificar o cumprimento da norma. Os resultados mostraram que o material utilizado para a fabricação da engrenagem trata-se de um aço ASTM 8620 constituído microestruturalmente de um núcleo martensítico e de uma superfície cementada, cujas espessura e dureza encontram-se adequadas aos padrões exigidos. Embora as propriedades metalúrgicas e mecânicas estivessem condizentes, verificou-se que a tensão de flexão atuante é maior que o valor admissível, estando, por esta razão, suscetível a uma falha por sobrecarga.
